Pagoda Box Announces Free Bandwidth

Free Bandwidth - Incoming, Internal and Outbound

We’re happy to announce the complete elimination of bandwidth charges. A lot has been written about our recent migration, but here’s one more reason for shifting to Softlayer’s hardware:

  • The migration drops bandwidth usage 25X below Softlayer’s limit. And happily, that limit continues to grow as Pagoda Box expands.

In short, everyone on Pagoda Box gets free bandwidth.

Note: Bandwidth usage trends have been predictably steady for the last 9 months, but it is technically possible that bandwidth usage might increase drastically in the future. In the unlikely event that total user bandwidth ever exceeds Pagoda Box’s underlying limit, we’ll work directly with the heaviest users to ensure bandwidth stays free for all but the biggest consumers of bandwidth.

Eliminate 3rd Party Bandwidth

The other way we eliminate bandwidth cost is not new, and it features Shared Writable Storage. By keeping assets inside Pagoda Box’s Shared Writable Directories versus an external service like S3, we boost performance and eliminate bandwidth charges between your app and a 3rd party… but if you’re a user, you already knew that.

    • Hey Arnold,

S3 is a very affordable option, especially for small, low traffic sites. But using S3 has some caveats: network latency and possible unexpected bandwidth charges. When/if your app get’s a huge surge in traffic, bandwidth charges can add up really fast.

S3 is still an option. Really, it’s just using the tools that makes the most sense for your application.

  1. Thanks Scott. Don’t get me wrong. I love Pagodabox, I’ve been bringing clients here. :D And with this development, I love Pagodabox even more.

I’m currently setting up a Linode box for a client that will host about 60GB of videos coming from one of my Pagodabox app. With this development, I’m now rethinking. However, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to convince my client since Linode is still 50% cheaper ($60 for 60GB).
